Close to the Idaho border off of highway 86 east of Baker is the ghost town of Cornucopia. Gold was discovered in 1884. It is said its gold ore was so rich nuggets would literally fall out the rock. Cornucopia has a meaning denoting wealth and plenty and the town was given its name by early miners who came from Cornucopia, Nevada. By contrast to other mining towns of the 80s and 90s, Cornucopia was somewhat orderly as it had few shootings and killings during its brief history. Many of its original buildings still stand despite the severe winters.
