Some
of the earliest known inhabitants of this continent made their home
in a cave in one of the low knolls dominated by Fort Rock, visible
across this basin. Radio-carbon dating indicates that sandals found
in the cave may be 9,000 years old. Fort Rock is the remnant of an
ancient volcano rising 325 feet above the plain. A great lake covered
this entire basin spreading as far south as Picture Rock. It was in
a cave facing that lake that the fort rock people lived. |
