Head east
from Portland and discover one of Oregon's best locations for pictures
If you're planning
a drive down the Columbia Gorge, a stop at the historic Vista House is a
must.
Vista House,
built in 1916-18, recently re-opened after a four-year closure for renovations.
Anyone with a camera can capture both the House of the bluff or the dramatic
views of the Columbia Gorge from the House itself.
Vista House
is Located at Crown Point State Scenic Viewpoint along Highway 30 east
of Troutdale. The recent $3.2 million in renovations included repair and
restoration of historic features plus the addition of an inclined walkway
for wheelchair access.
The Vista
House was built at the same time as Highway 30 (what is now the Historic
Columbia River Gorge Highway, and the only way to reach Crown Point).
The building was designed to be a place of refreshment and enjoyment of
the Columbia Gorge.
The octagonal
building with its copper dome features a museum, gift shop and interpretive
display of historic and geologic points of interest in the Gorge.
